Yellow Dent Infinite
Yellow Dent Infinite is a model of future corn. With no extra waste, Yellow Dent Infinite only produce the part we need from corn plant, which is corn kernels. The pipe mimics corn silk, transporting sugar produced by photosynthesis to the artificial germ, triggering the mechanism to produce corn starch that full-fills the pericarp. Farmers can harvest corn kernels by itself without necessity to take down the corn cob. And ideally, we don’t even need corn plant anymore, Yellow Dent Infinite could do its job by attaching to any green things that could finish photosynthesis processes.
WHY:
Corn is a very dominant plant in the world, as its biological structure is relatively easy to modify, people has working on improving yield of corn for many generations. It was not even a grain originally, it is a type of grasses. So working with this idea of domestication of corn, we still have a long way to to go. As it might be the only crop left in the world under a potential extreme future condition (as proposed in movie Interstellar).
However, we usually only consume a small part of corn, which is corn kernels. The other parts seem like waste materials for us, which takes more than 90% of the whole plant. So if we could only produce kernel without the need of planting the other parts, that would reduce a lot of waste on resources, energy, labour and land.
But is that really a future we want? Eating semi-artificial corn for life? Or it doesn’t matter because corn is semi-artificial anyway.
