DOORBELL
Doorbell is a system of sound, I created a scene of door that connecting indoor and outdoor. The system that makes the sound (the feet pump system) is in the exterior, while the sound itself coming out from the whistler hiding in the tip of the pump in the interior side of the door. The last pump hanging on the door (the one directly connected to the whistler) was the one I found from thrift store, while all the other six were from Amazon, I also had to oder the whistler from China. I asked my viewers where is the sound, is it in the Amazon pumps, the thrift store pumps or the whistler? Through reflecting on this question, I want my viewers to realize that the sound was made by the whole system, it can never been made with a single part. From the announcement of the source of my materials, I want viewers to question our perception of sustainability. For example, we usually buy a cup made with recycled materials and think we are acting sustainably, but we don’t notice the process of mass-manufacturing it, the process of shipping it and packaging it. It’s like people standing in the interior of the door don't see the whole system behind the door, they can only see the a tip of the pump from thrift store, and thinking the sound come from this sustainable source. Doorbell is a warning for people that are still “standing inside the door” to walk out and be aware of what actually makes the sound.
